About Briarwood Soccer Club
Briarwood Soccer Club is dedicated to providing children an opportunity to play soccer in a Christian environment so they can develop physically, socially, and spiritually into men and women who are honoring to God.
Briarwood Soccer Club’s banner name is the “Ambassadors.” The Ambassadors name follows the spirit of 2 Corinthians 5:20, which states: “We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf to be reconciled to God.” All our U11-U19 teams are called the Ambassadors or Lady Ambassadors. The Club’s tag line, “We serve a great God. We play a great game. We are Ambassadors,” reflects an attitude of reaching out to members of our community and introducing them to the Gospel of Grace through fun-filled participation in the most popular game in the world. The theme verse for the Briarwood Soccer Club is Habakkuk 3:19, which states: “The Sovereign Lord is my strength. He makes my feet like the feet of a deer. He enables me to go on the heights.” T-shirts, hats, and shirts bearing the club’s new logo are available at the Soccer Post Soccer Shop (205) 783-5556 and our online store at soccer.com, link through our website
The Briarwood Soccer logo was adopted for the club July 2013. The cross is central to the logo with a big gold cross in the middle of the shield. The cross of Christ is front and center to the Christian life and we want to be reminded of what Jesus did for us on the cross every time we pull on our jersey. The crown of thorns at the top of the logo reminds us again of Jesus atoning work on the cross when he wore the crown of thorns. The crown of thorns is also the logo of Briarwood Presbyterian Church in Birmingham, Alabama, the home church of Briarwood Soccer Club. In the red shapes on the sides of the crown of thorns reads Est. 1981.
COVID 19 Health Guidelines for Briarwood Soccer Club
Health Screening:
All players, coaches, spectators, and adult volunteers MUST self-screen before entering field per directions from the CDC Youth Sports Guidelines (cdc.gov/coronavirus). They will answer the 5 COVID-19 questions and take their own temperature before coming to the field. Anyone answering yes to any of the 5 questions and anyone having a temperature greater than 100 will not be allowed to participate. Here are the 5 COVID 19 screening questions:
1) Have you or the child been in close contact with a confirmed case of COVID-19?
2) Are you or the child experiencing a cough, shortness of breath or sore throat?
3) Have you or the child had a fever in the last 48 hours?
4) Have you or the child experienced new loss of taste or smell?
5) Have you or the child experienced vomiting or diarrhea in the last 24 hours?
Social Distancing:
All Coaches, players, and spectators will maintain 6 feet distance at all times. Upon entering the field, all players will maintain a 6-foot distance from each other, place bags, water bottle, and belongings on predetermined sideline spots that are 6 feet apart. Spectators will have space for each family unit with 6 feet distance between the next group to watch the game. Each family will have a 6-foot box marked out to sit or stand in to view the game. Each box will be 6 feet apart from other boxes so we can keep spectators socially distanced during games. We will not have a physical team bench. To reduce the close contact between players when they are not in the game, each player will sit and rest with their family unit when they are not playing. If no family members are present, they will sit and rest socially distanced in the team area. We will have signage reminding spectators of guidelines.
Face Coverings:
We will continue to follow state and local health guidelines in place at the time of intramural play. Currently this means:
Sanitization:
All equipment will be sanitized before and after games: cones, goals, soccer balls will be sprayed with sanitizer or wiped with wipes. Every coach and player will use hand sanitizer upon entering field and upon leaving the field. We will have bottles at each field with hand sanitizer available.
Restrooms:
The restroom trailer at 119 fields will be open. Sanitization spray will be used regularly to disinfect the unit. The trailer is a single user unit (one male and one female at a time) so only 1 person will be in a restroom at a time. The trailer will be sanitized regularly.
If player or coach is exposed to COVID 19:
If a player or coach is exposed to COVID 19 (in close contact with a person who tested positive) then that player or coach must quarantine for 14 days and we recommend getting appropriate medical attention. If team was exposed to that person in close contact, then the entire team would be quarantined for 14 days per CDC recommendations.

U10 Boys and Girls Skills Development Program
Following the recommendations of the United States Youth Soccer Association (“U. S. Youth Soccer“). Briarwood Soccer Club runs its own small-sided program for the U9/U10 age group. This seven-a-side format, including goalkeepers, gives young players far more playing time and allows for much more fun and opportunity for skill development than other formats available.
In addition, the U9/10 program ends each season with its “Mills Sproull Cup” competition. All U10 coaches are licensed by U. S. Youth Soccer or NSCAA and the Alabama Youth Soccer Association (“AYSA”) and are proficient in providing a high level of instruction to U10 players. We use the Coerver Coaching curriculum for this age to develop a high level of skill in each player.
Briarwood Soccer Club has separate leagues for boys and girls at the U10 level. This U10 Development Program has been a great foundation for our U11 and older Ambassador teams. We attribute the success of our older teams to the skills and confidence built in our small-sided setting at the U10 age. Also continued this season will be a U10-U11 play in the newly formed Academy league in ASA, now called the Legion D-League. This Academy level helps develop the most amount of players at these ages and will give them a taste of competition against other clubs around the Birmingham area.
Special Requests Policy for U6, U8 and U10 Players during COVID 19
